I live in a small French village in the Yonne area, near to the Morvan Forest and National Park. I moved to the Ariege region of France back in 2007, moving to the Yonne in Nov. 2008. Sales seem rather healthier up here and the landscape is equally breathtaking, though very different in character.
Originally, I am from Walsall in the industrial Midlands and studied for my degree in Fine Art painting and printmaking in Sheffield. I chose to study in Sheffield in part because of it's proximity to the High Peak, which I first saw during art camps to Dovedale whilst still at school. I have never lost my love of the landscape there.
I was also one of the 1st six members of Vernon Mill Artists in Stockport, I would recommend a visit to see their work to anyone seriously interested in excellent contemporary work at a good price, in person or on their website, it is probably the largest group of artists in one place in the UK and the variety of styles and sheer talent there is outstanding. I miss the artists there and my old studio very much. I have also taught and lived in the Lake District and St Bees and some of my work reflects my time in these beautiful places.
My paintings, range from the quite figurative to the more abstract in nature, I am always searching for a balance between the two, to use the strength of the underlying abstract qualities, the essence of a thing, without loosing the joy of the visible, accessible world. I prefer working during dusk, the colours and tones of the landscape close down and shadowed areas leave something to the viewer's imagination.
The work reflects my own emotional response to a place. Contrary to the fears of female friends I never feel afraid of being in the landscape alone at this time, on the contrary I feel concealed and safe, small and insignificant in all that space. I delight in being left peaceful and alone in places, others having departed due to the lateness of the hour or the fall in light and temperature.
For me the dark and monumental nature of the landscape is a spiritual as well as an emotional fix.
I would be happy to ship work to England or other countries, the larger pieces cost around 20 to 25 pounds sterling for post and packing to England. I would love to hear from you regarding the work. Happy viewing and collecting to all of you.
